Submissions
What types of books do you publish?
We consider carefully developed fiction and selected nonfiction, including literary fiction, contemporary fiction, mystery and thriller, historical fiction, memoir, poetry, practical guides, and inspirational titles. We do not currently publish children’s picture books, textbooks, or technical manuals.
How do I submit my manuscript?
Read the Author Submission Policy, then complete the manuscript submission form. Include a synopsis, a description of your intended reader, and the complete manuscript where possible.
Do you accept unagented submissions?
Yes. We read agented and unagented work with the same attention, and a substantial part of our list arrives directly through this website.
How long does the review process take?
Our typical initial review period is 8–12 weeks. Timelines vary with submission volume and manuscript length. If you have not heard from us after 14 weeks, you are welcome to follow up.
Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
Yes, provided you notify us promptly if another publisher offers representation or publication.
Will I be charged to submit?
No. Montavellum does not charge a reading fee for standard manuscript submissions through this website, and we never ask authors to pay toward production costs.
Can I resubmit a manuscript you have declined?
Only if you have substantially revised the work, and preferably if we invited a resubmission. Please mention the earlier submission in your covering note.
Contracts & production
What happens after you accept a manuscript?
We discuss the vision, the schedule, and the terms before anything is signed. After the agreement, the book moves through developmental editing, copyediting, design, and two proofing passes. The full path is set out on our about page.
How long until my book is published?
Twelve to eighteen months from signature is typical, depending on the state of the manuscript and the publication slot that best suits the title.
Do authors have a say in the cover?
Yes. Our designers work from a brief that includes your input, and you see concepts before a direction is chosen. The final decision is made jointly with the publisher.
What formats do you publish in?
Most titles are released in hardcover or paperback alongside an eBook edition. Audiobook editions are commissioned for selected titles.
